5 Key Reasons to Upgrade Your NAV Engine

Engine upgrades allow your organization to be on the latest version of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, without making major changes to the system design or business processes. Upgrading to the 5.0 SP1 version of the Microsoft Dynamics NAV engine will allow you to take advantage of the latest performance enhancements and hot fixes from Microsoft.   You can upgrade your NAV engine for a much lower cost than upgrading the entire system.

While much less complex than a full database upgrade, engine upgrades can be an excellent long term investment in your Microsoft Dynamics NAV solution.  AVF's IT and Customer Care departments can typically perform the upgrade within a four to eight hour timeframe, including setup and training.  Engine upgrades are a cost effective way to enhance the overall performance of your system.

Key Reasons To Upgrade:

1. Leverage the latest in Microsoft SQL Server technology. The latest version of Microsoft severs, including Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008, are only compatible with 4.0SP3 clients or later. As discussed in the October 2008 edition of Insight News, SQL Server offers many benefits over C/SIDE servers, such as the ability to automate maintenance tasks and procedures.
2. Improved Search, Filter, and Query Performance.  NAV 5.0 SP1 clients greatly improve the performance of filtering and searching within Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Utilizing indexed views and flow fields, the latest engines provide real-time access to relevant information from various cards within the system.
3. Ensure Microsoft Dynamics NAV will work with the newest Microsoft Operating systems. The newest Microsoft Operation Systems, such as Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, are only compatible with 4.0 SP3 engines and later. If you intend to run Microsoft Dynamics NAV on a new desktop that runs Vista, or upgrade a current desktop running NAV to the operating system, you will need to upgrade the engine to be able to run your solution.
4. Document Linking. Upgrading to the latest engine enables document linking and the ability to send (not export) data to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. While not a reporting function, sending data to Word and Excel will give you increased flexibility in how you format and present data.
5. Microsoft Support. Microsoft currently only offers technical support for 4.0 SP3 clients and later.

Navigating Through Forms in Microsoft Dynamics NAV

This month we have several quick and easy tips for navigating through Microsoft Dynamics NAV cards.

1. Clicking on the label next to the form on a contact card highlights the entire Field for editing as does tabbing into the field.

2. F2 puts a Field in edit mode with the cursor at the beginning of the field. Press F2 a second time and you begin editing at the end of the value entered in the form.

3. Use Tab and Shift-Tab (Tab moves down the card, Shift-Tab moves up) to quickly navigate through contact cards.
